PROPOSALS to redevelop a train station could meet with objections from an environmental group.
The Dedham Vale Society says it will oppose work at Manningtree station, if it is likely to affect a nearby beauty spot.
Recent changes to train timetables have increased the traffic at Manningtree station, as commuters from Harwich are forced to change for a London service.
The extra numbers have reignited calls for better facilities and improved disabled access.
Paul Gallifant, Dedham Vale Society committee member, said the station is at the gateway of the Dedham Area of Natural Beauty. He is concerned building works could impact on views in the area.
He said: “We would oppose any large work and would have to look at proposals.
“The station is just within the area of natural beauty, which runs along Cox’s Hill. The station is a lovely Victorian building, but we would probably have opposed it being built in the first place.
“We don’t have objections to minor changes and improved disabled access inside the station itself.
“I would be concerned if they decide the car park needs extending to incorporate the increased population.”
Work on an improved lift and disabled amenities could go ahead if funding is found.
Carlo Guglielmi, Tendring councillor, said: “The access needs work, as there is a steep set of stairs down into a subway then stairs back up.
“The point is not many members of the Dedham Vale Society live in the area.
“Local people rely on the service to get to work and are being penalised.”
The society opposed a £2.3million car park extension built in 2009, claiming it was an eyesore.
Neil Skinner, of Manningtree Railway Users Association, said: “Disabled access is a big concern of ours, especially now commuters from the Harwich line will be more regularly changing here to get to London.
“We just need to find someone with the money to carry out the work.”
