A FORMER mental Health patient from Clacton has been given an award after taking part in a radio documentary about her experiences.

Angela Barnes was treated by North Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust for bipolar disorder after suffering a psychotic episode and being detained under the Mental Health Act in 2005.

The documentary, Anatomy of a Mental Illness was produced by BBC Radio Four and won the speech radio prize at the Mind Mental Health Media Awards in London, beating four other shortlisted shows.

The awards aim to celebrate the best portrayals and reporting of mental illness in the media.

The documentary explored Angela’s experiences and her recovery. She now serves as a governor of the Tendring area for the North Essex Partnership.

She said said: “I am so pleased I was allowed to be part of a much larger process to inform the public about mental illness and its impact on the individual, and those around them.

“I most certainly didn’t expect us to win, as there were some really good contenders, so when it was announced, I was completely thrilled and amazed.”

Andrew Geldard, the trust’s chief executive said: “This award is an acknowledgement of Angela’s courage, determination and also of the work we do here at North Essex partnership.

“I am delighted we gave Angela all the help and support that she needed to make a full recovery.

“Mental illness like many other conditions can be treated and this is an example of a successful outcome.”
