THE Gazette’s Treats for Troops scheme has been named Community Campaign of the Year at the EDF Energy East of England Media Awards.

More than 100 businesses signed up to the campaign to offer discounts for troops from Colchester-based 16 Air Assault Brigade on leave from Afghanistan.

James Wills, deputy editor, and Rachel Fitch, reporter, picked up the award from ITV Anglia presenter Jonathan Wills and former BBC Look East presenter, Carol Bundock.

James Wills said: “We are delighted at how successful the campaign has been and the award is the icing on the cake.

“Making life a little bit easier for our troops when they return from Afghanistan is the least we can do to show our appreciation.

“A big thank you to all of the businesses which signed up and made the campaign such a success.”

The awards, which celebrate the best press and broadcast journalism across the region, were held yesterday in Ipswich.
