ALLEGATIONS of abuse and assault by Colchester-based soldiers are being investigated by the Ministry of Defence.

Detectives are carrying out a criminal investigation following claims that Redcaps hospitalised four Iraqi policeman after beating them.

The incident is alleged to have happened at the same police station in southern Iraq, where six Colchester-based Redcaps were killed by a mob in 2003.

The alleged victims claim soldiers battered them with rifles and batons and kicked and punched them, according to documents submitted to the High Court to try and force a public inquiry into allegations of abuse by UK forces during the Iraq War.

Nobody has been arrested.

Redcaps, a branch of the military police, were based at Colchester in 2003.
