CHART-TOPPER Matt Cardle made a surprise appearance at an open mic night in Essex days before the start of the X Factor tour.
The X Factor winner took time out from preparations for the 46-show tour to team up with former band mate Ali McMillan, from Halstead, for an acoustic set at High Barn, in Great Bardfield.
Wendy Meldrum, who works at the venue, said: “It was so lovely to see Matt and Ali back on the High Barn stage.
“Despite all the media attention and crazy whirl of publicity, Matt remains a charming, totally grounded guy. This came as no surprise to any of those who have worked with or known him.”
Ali and Matt, from Little Maplestead, were in the group Darwyn before the singer joined Chelmsford band Seven Summers and then entered last year’s X Factor on ITV.
Prior to his success, Matt was a regular patron of High Barn, where Ali now works.
