I was in Eld Lane, Colchester, on February 3, when a youth came running past me, obviously trying to escape someone.

Suddenly a voice shouted: “Stop him!”

A not-so-young gentleman a few yards further on grabbed the youth and held on to him until the people chasing him came and got him.

No one else stepped in to help.

The youth was marched off immediately and it seemed his captors didn't even bother to thank the person who stopped him.

I followed this gentleman into a shop and congratulated him and thanked him for being public spirited.

As far as I could see, no one else bothered, despite it being a busy morning.

I am not suggesting this man wanted thanks, but he certainly deserved them.

Is it any wonder people are not getting involved any more?
