The number of falls at one of Colchester General Hospital’s elderly care wards has halved since a new scheme was introduced.

The average number of falls each month on Birch Ward was 12 last month compared to 24 previously.

The hospital started the trial, which involves checking on frail patients every two hours, after falls on wards at Colchester General Hospital and Essex County Hospital reached 144 in May and 125 in June last year.

The trust’s target is 96.

The scheme has been extended to a second care of the elderly ward and there are plans to roll it out across the trust.
