BATTLING schoolchildren have lodged a protest petition against plans for a quarry in their village.

Essex County Council wants to set up a quarry 250 metres from Alresford Primary School and bordering a Montessori pre-school in Wivenhoe Road.

Primary school head boy Aiden Morris launched the petition after attending a public protest meeting organised by Alresford Action Groupy.

Pupils presented the 182-signature document to district councillor Gary Scott to hand to the county council.

Eleven-year-old Aiden said he decided to act “for the sake of the village and the school.

“I was not pleased to hear about the gravel pit.

“I got nearly 200 signatures and everyone was happy to sign it.”

Headteacher Robert Collins said: “The gravel pit could have a big impact on the school and the village.

“I’m pleased to support Aiden, as he is showing that he cares for our community.” Mr Scott said: “I was glad to receive the petition as it shows the children care about the village and the school they attend.”

Other sites recommended for development in north Essex include Thorrington, Ardleigh, Great Bentley, Rivenhall, Rayne, Witham, Silver End, Stanway, Fingringhoe and Birch.

Tendring Council has opposed plans for quarry sites in Alresford and Frating.

But it has agreed a small extension to a site in Ardleigh.
