CONCERNS have been raised over the time taken to fix traffic lights at a busy roundabout.

The lights at St Botolph’s, in Colchester, have been causing confusion after they stopped working on Sunday morning.

They were still not working last night.

Ron Levy, owner of the Colchester Barber’s Shop, based on the roundabout, said he had witnessed several near-misses and customers had complained about the situation.

He said: “One of the main problems is the lights on the pedestrian crossing are not working and people are trying to cross the road there while the cars are all coming through from the car park.

“I have seen a number of difficult situations there.

“We can see all the traffic from our shop and, although people are taking it cautiously, there have been one or two horn-blowing situations where people have got a bit cross.

“I can’t really understand why they have left it so long to fix.”

Colchester councillor for Castle ward, Bill Frame, said: “I am concerned if there is a safety issue there, for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, and it really is something that needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson from Essex County Council, which is responsible for the lights, said: “The contractor has been informed and they will be fixed as soon as possible.”
