ST Osyth’s parish church was full to bursting as more than 400 people paid their respects at the funeral of popular former headmaster Raymond Stratford.

Mr Stratford, headmaster of St Osyth C of E Primary School for 26 years, from 1963, grew up in Buckinghamshire, and served in the RAF, eventually becoming a sergeant drill instructor.

His widow, Edris, whom he married in 1955, said: “He was much loved and highly respected by everybody he came into contact with. The school was always like a large, happy family, thanks to his leadership, personality, sense of humour and thoughtful and caring ways.

“Hundreds of children are a living testament to his work.”

He retired in 1989 and threw his energy into clubs, and organisations, including St Osyth branch of the Royal British Legion, Clacton Rotary Club, the Church of St Peter and St Paul, St Osyth, and various environmental groups.

He leaves left his wife, three daughters, Ruth, Clare and Sarah, and five grandchildren.

Mrs Stratford added: “He was a family man. He was devoted, caring and loving and adored the children. They all loved him dearly.

“Raymond will be missed by so many. Many people said what a privilege and pleasure it was to have known him.”

Mr Stratford died after a five-year struggle with cancer.
