A MAN was rescued by quarry workers after falling into a lake during a fishing trip in Wivenhoe.

Emergency services were called to the aid of the 43-year-old, who is from Colchester, after he slipped into the lake in Keelars Lane at 12.45pm today.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said a rapid response vehicle was on scene in seven minutes, and was backed up by an ambulance and the Essex Air Ambulance.

Paramedic Laurie Phillipson, who was on the helicopter, said: "The patient had been fishing with his son when he slipped on the river bank, injuring his back.

"Any movement was extremely painful for him but due to the remote and very muddy location land ambulances were unable to reach him safely.

"With the assistance of the local quarrymen, the man was carried through the mud to the air ambulance for transport to hospital."

The man was taken to Colchester General Hospital for further treatment.
