A MASSIVE project to stop Walton's crumbling Naze cliffs falling into the sea is almost complete.

The £1.2million Crag Walk scheme has seen more than 20,000 tonnes of granite rocks placed at the base of the cliffs to protect them from the waves.

The last of the huge blocks are now in place after being shipped over from Norway.

A 500ft walkway will be built along the top of the defences so visitors can reach the internationally important cliffs, which contain 50million-year-old fossils.

The project will also safeguard the historic Naze Tower which is less than 200ft from the crumbling cliff edge.

The Naze Protection Society has campaigned for more then 25 years to save the site.

Chairman David Gager said: “It is fantastic news that we are now almost at the finishing line.

“It will make all the campaigning and everyone’s efforts over the past two and a half decades worthwhile.”
