FORGET the stereotypes – the ‘royalty’ at this year’s Colchester Carnival will be truly deserving of the crown.

Organisers at Colchester Round Table are seeking a carnival hero or heroine, far removed from the traditional queen and her court.

Instead, officials want to reward someone, of any age, whose example can inspire others.

It could be someone who has cared for someone for a long period, someone who has been on a personal journey or who has worked tirelessly for the community.

Carnival secretary Dan Woodruff said: “As this year is all about bringing carnival back to the people of Colchester, then it should celebrate the ‘unsung’ heroes of our town. I urge people to put forward the names of friends or family and gain them some well-deserved recognition.”

The Gazette is officially supporting the event. Deputy editor James Wills said: “What could be better than having someone particularly deserving at the centre of the event?

“It could be a foster parent, a child who has battled illness or an elderly person who has worked tirelessly for the town.

“We want someone the town can cheer for their work, spirit or as an example to others. We would encourage people to nominate themselves, or others, as soon as possible. We will do everything we can to ensure they have a great day, they look fantastic and it will be an experience they will never forget.”

Nominations can be sent to the Daily Gazette. The winner will be announced by the end of April.

Entries are welcome from anyone, of any age, as long as they live in the Colchester district.

Plans for the July 16 procession are well under way, with organisers hoping to return the event to its former glory.

Last year the show did not go ahead due to failure to get permission to close roads. All profits from this year’s event will go to the local community. The Round Table is working with charity Grassroots to give grants to good causes.

Nominations should be sent to Andrea Collitt, 43-44 Oriel House, North Hill, Colchester, CO1 1TZ, or e-mailed to andrea.collitt@ nqe.com.

The closing date is Friday, April 22. For more details of the carnival, visit the Gazette website gazette-news.co.uk or colchester carnival.com
