THE buzz about Colchester Carnival is building, according to organisers.
Community groups and organisations are getting behind this year’s event on Saturday, July 16, supported by the Gazette.
More than 40 groups have already shown an interest in taking part.
Dan Woodruff, carnival secretary, said: “There is a lot to do, but we are very pleased with the reaction of the community.
“We have had quite a few applications to be in the procession “We have also had the support of community arts organisations and sports clubs, who have committed themselves already, and 40 to 50 organisations have said they want to take part.”
Mr Woodruff said plans for the family day in Castle Park were also shaping up.
He said: “It will be on all day, from 11am until the evening. There will be stalls, food, drink, music and carnival acts throughout the day.
“The Gazette being a partner is really helping to build excitement. We are getting a lot of traffic on the website and the social media.
The buzz is building and it is going to be a great day for the family.”
Colchester United have thrown their weight behind the carnival. Club mascot Eddie the Eagle will be there and will also be taking part in the carnival procession.
Matt Hudson, U’s communication manager, said: “Colchester United is delighted to be getting involved. It’s only right that Eddie the Eagle should be at the forefront of our contribution.
“He’s become one of the most recognisable figures in town and he’s looking forward to getting involved.
“The club hope to contribute in a number of ways to the carnival and are confident this year will see a return to the days where the carnival became a centrepiece of the town’s annual calendar.”
Mr Woodruff said: “It’s great to know that Eddie’s coming. He’s a big favourite with all the fans, and the rest of us in town, so he’ll help to add colour and fun to what we hope will be a noisy, vibrant celebration of all things Colchester. With the club involved, we think this promises to be a special carnival.”
The procession will leave Abbeyfields at the garrison, travel along Butt Road, Head Street and into High Street, finishing at Colchester Castle.
