A MAN has been found guilty of smashing a pint glass in another man’s face in a Colchester pub.
Bradley Juan struck James Nurse on either side of the face with a half-pint glass in the Dirty Penguin pub on July 10 last year.
The prosecution alleged the attack had been unprovoked.
Mr Nurse was left with blood streaming down his face and unable to see as it ran into his eyes.
Giving evidence, Juan, of Rotary Way, Colchester, told the jury he had felt threatened when talking to Mr Nurse and had put up his hand to protect himself, forgetting he was holding a glass. He said it had never been his intention to use a glass as a weapon.
Juan said he had feared Mr Nurse, who was leaning forward, was about to throw a punch at him.
While trying to talk to Mr Nurse, he had seen a hand come up beside him and had moved his hand up. Juan said: “It was a natural reaction to try to defend myself.”
When arrested, Juan said he was “horrified” about what had taken place. He had also required hospital treatment for cuts to his hands.
A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found the 30-year-old guilty of unlawful wounding but not guilty of wounding with intent to inflict grevious bodily harm.
After the jury returned their verdicts, Judge John Devaux told Juan that he would be sentenced on May 23. He has been released on bail until then.
