A WHIZZKID has won a trip to San Francisco in an international competition.
Philip Greene, 14, from Mile End, Colchester, is one of only seven winners – and the only one from outside America.
He will visit the headquarters of leading games manufacturer Electronic Arts and famous sites such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
The Game Changers competition, organised by Digital Media Learning, threw down the challenge of creating an adventure game. Philip, a Year 10 pupil at St Benedict’s Catholic College, in Colchester, caught the judges’ eye with his Indiana Jones-inspired entry the Tomb of Khafra.
Philip said: “It is a bit like Indiana Jones and the Mummy films.
“You have to get through the different tombs to get the treasure at the end.
“I kept following up with the competition organisers to find out how I had got on, but they kept putting back a decision. So I was amazed to find out I had won, as I had left it for a while.”
Philip created his game, which had to have an educational message, using an Electronic Arts game called Spore.
He is studying for a business, administration and finance diploma at the school in Norman Way.
He will fly to San Francisco on Saturday. He said: “I will be meeting the other winners, who are all from America, and the game designers.”
