A DARING family leapt from a plane to raise cash for charity and pay tribute to their mother.

Wayne Sheekey organised the charity skydive for Cancer Research UK after his mum Sharon died eight months ago, aged 57.

He was joined in the challenge by brothers Thomas, Shaun and Barry, who all live in Clacton.

Barry’s step-son, Ryan Lewsey and brother-in-law Darren Priestley also agreed to take the plunge.

The family has been hit hard by cancer, with Wayne, from Colchester, and brother Darren both suffering from polypsis.

They both had to have their colons removed to prevent the possibility of developing bowel cancer. Wayne suffers from a fear of heights, but said he wanted to do something outrageous to raise as much cash as possible for Cancer Research.

Wayne said: “I was scared of heights and it was the first time I had been on a plane.

“I was fine until they opened the door of the plane and my heart just went. I was terrified.

“But as soon as I left the plane, it was just an unbelievable feeling. The views were incredible and my fear of heights has gone. I want to do it again now.”

The family have already raised about £2,000 in sponsorship for completing the skydive.

Wayne added: “I’m really pleased with the total we’ve raised so far. It’s more than I expected.

“This was a way for us to celebrate the memory of our mother, and I’m so glad we did it.

“We also wanted to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research, and I just hope we can do our bit.

“Our family has really struggled with cancer, and I don’t want my children to go through what I have.”
