With regard to the two superstores proposed for the Butt Road area of Colchester.
The retail giants Tesco and Sainsbury have failed to do their homework, as even with the additional housebuilding the potential customer base is too small to sustain two superstores in that area.
Drury Arms is a bad location for a superstore. The Drury junction has traffic safety issues, for which traffic lights were installed.
With the addition of a new road at the junction serving Abbey Fields there is now extra traffic flow.
Add a superstore with its delivery vehicles and customer traffic the Drury junction will become congested and an accident black spot.
Quite rightly, the planners should have no powers to interfere in the planning process on competition grounds. The future of small retailers in the area is down to the consumer, thus it is a case of use them or lose them.
