A SUPERMARKET has been doing its bit in the fight against bowel cancer.
Shoppers have been treated to free fresh fruit at Sainsbury’s, in Tollgate.
Staff from Colchester General Hospital have been on hand to give out the fruit at the pharmacy area of the store, between Tuesday and yesterday.
The drive is part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.
Anna Wordley, nurse consultant for gastro-intestinal cancers, said: “Bowel cancer affects both men and women, particularly those aged over 50 and over, although the number of younger people affected is increasing.
“However, the sooner a patient is diagnosed, the better their chances of successful treatment.
“Being aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer is the most important part of protecting yourself from the disease.”
Symptoms of the disease include a persistent change in bowel habit, a pain of a lump in the abdomen, unexpected weight loss and unexplained tiredness
