We wish to add our opinion and serious concern about the treatment of blue badge holders in Colchester.
The complaints of many disabled people about the High Street proposals have been sent to the council and the Gazette. We can only repeat some of the concerns.
1. The procedures will force disabled people and their helpers to shop elsewhere.
2. The town centre will gradually decay and become less important, as will the retail centre.
3. Disabled people will increasingly feel there is discrimination against them and this ban may even disable people further, if this plan goes ahead.
4. Disabled people often need to be pushed in wheelchairs.
If this plan goes ahead, then the carers will find it difficult to enable people to access the town centre. The town is on a hill!
It is unfortunate the majority of disabled people have a significant mobility problem. Also, they happen to be in the over-65 group.
These people are likely not to have access to the internet. Therefore, they are unlikely to be able to participate in consultation meetings or protests.
It is clear to us the council is not listening and, therefore, discriminating against disabled people. It does not care.
