FILM and boxing fans in north Essex are getting the chance to meet the brothers who inspired an Oscar winning movie.
The Fighter told the story of “Irish” Micky Ward and his brother Dicky Eklund, a role which won actor Christian Bale a best supporting actor Oscar, and their journey to the top of the world of boxing.
The film, which also featured Mark Wahlberg as Micky, scooped three Golden Globes and was named Best Sports Movie.
Now Micky and Dicky are heading to Britain for a trio of “audience with” events, including an appearance at the Crown Plaza Resort, Tolleshunt Knights, next month.
It will be the first time the brothers have spoken in public about their story.
Their promoter Nina C, the first female promoter of the sport, says Micky has even delayed the American release of his new book, a Warrior’s Heart, to undertake the mini-tour.
Micky says: “I’m really excited to be coming back.
“I have always had a lot of love for the UK, as that is where I won my WBU Championship light welterweight belt – it's one of my favourite places.”
Older brother Dicky adds: “I made some good boxing friends in the UK, and can’t wait to catch up on what’s going on there.
“The Brits are good people, I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’m ready to go and hope the UK is ready for me and to hear the tale of when I knocked down Sugar Ray – over a cuppa!”
Nina says of the Fighter: “It’s such a fantastic film, and the beautiful thing is from start to finish it’s true.
“This is a once in a lifetime experience for me, and I am proud to be promoting the brothers – what better way for fans to meet them than at ‘An Audience With’ event?
“Dicky is a joker, a laugh a minute and Micky a gentleman. They are both really lovely people and it’s an honour to work with them.”
Nina says the visit will also raise funds for the OneLife UK Charity.
A VIP ticket including a photograph with Micky and Dicky, front row seats and a meal, costs £120, a gold ticket includes a meal and costs £100. Visit touchglove promotions.co.uk
