COLCHESTER schools are being urged to join the fight against cancer by entering the town’s Race for Life.

Sunday, July 15, will see supporters raising funds for Cancer Research UK by completing a five-kilometre course round Lower Castle Park.

So far, about 1,000 women have signed up for the morning race and about 300 for the one in the afternoon.

Now, organisers want to see more pupils, teachers and parents taking part in the all-female event. Gill Burgess, the charity’s Essex events manager, said: “There are lots of reasons for schools to get involved – from nurturing team spirit to getting involved in the community to just having fun.

“Whatever their motivation, they’ll be doing something extraordinary – raising money to fund research which saves lives.”

Race for Life is a non-competitive event, held at 11am and 2pm, with participants choosing whether to walk, jog or run.

All women are welcome, regardless of whether they take part on their own or in a group, and there is no minimum sponsorship.

“By entering Race for Life, and helping to fund Cancer Research UK’s crucial work, schools in Colchester could make a big difference to cancer patients here on their doorstep,” said Mrs Burgess.

“Cancer Research UK’s work is at the heart of that progress. By taking part in Race for Life, pupils in Colchester can help to turn hope into reality.”

The charity, which spent more than £41 million on research in East Anglia last year, has developed a special pack for primary and secondary schools, with ideas for assemblies and top tips for training and raising funds.

It also contains healthy living advice to help schools kick-start a healthier lifestyle for their pupils.
