A JUBILEE garden in Wivenhoe has been given a cash boost.
The town council has been given a £5,000 grant from the Colchester Borough Homes Community Budget Group.
The cash will be used to create a permanent reminder of the queen’s 60 years as monarch.
Plans for the garden include a picnic area sheltered by a decorative canopy, a water feature, memorial Rose Garden and a quiet corner.
A wildlife garden is also planned for part of the site, which is being organised by Transition Town Wivenhoe.
Town mayor Robert Needham said: “This project has wide support from across the town, which has been endorsed by external funders such as Cory Environmental Trust, we are grateful for the support given to the project by Colchester Borough Homes.
“We hope to convert their support into a lasting acknowledgement to her Majesty and in doing so we are converting an area of unused land into a useful amenity for the people of Wivenhoe.”
Robert Needham (Con) is standing for the Wivenhoe Quay ward in the local elections on May 3. Also standing are Cyril Liddy (Lab), Sandra Moog (Green) and Ben Richards (Lib Dem).
