THE makers of Tiptree’s famous jam have been recognised for their sustainable farming.
Colchester mayor Helen Chuah joined BBC gardening presenter Ken Crowther, farmers and guests at the launch of Wilkin & Sons’ farm as a Leaf demonstration farm.
Leaf (Linking the Environment and Farming) chief executive Caroline Drummond presented the award in recognition of efforts to educate and inform farmers, teachers, government officials and the media about farming.
To mark the occasion, Mr Crowther and Wilkin & Sons chairman Peter Wilkin planted a mulberry tree.
Mr Crowther said: “It’s always been in my heart to encourage people to understand where food comes from and it’s lovely to be here today at Tiptree looking at the new table top strawberries and the fabulous cherry blossom.”
Chris Newenham, Wilkin’s farm director, added: “We now have a significant responsibility on our shoulders, but we are nonetheless very excited about the challenges.”
