TRADE unionists gathered in Colchester to commemorate workers who have lost their lives around the globe.
Representatives from Colchester and District TUC and other unions held a service in Castle Park on Saturday.
The ceremony took place at a commemorative tree planted more than 10 years and marked with a plaque.
It began with two minutes’ reflection before Reverend Mark Thompson led a short prayer.
The event was held to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day, recognised by countries across the world.
Councillor Dave Harris, who helped organise the service, said: “This day is a timely reminder to those still in work to stay safe and follow heath and safety rules and processes.
“It is also in memory of those who have been lost, killed or injured at work and their families as well.
“That is why I back it every year, it is so important. I lost a good mate at work several years ago and it is a strong memory for me.
“It was good to see a lot of people there, and we also had apologies from others who couldn’t make it due to work commitments too.”
