A TROUBLE spot on Colchester’s Greenstead estate may be turned into a peace garden.
A group of residents with homes in and around Balfe Court say at present the cul-de-sac’s play area attracts yobs, wo leave litter.
They also have concerns because the play area is next to an electricity sub-station, which they think should be covered over to stop balls going in there and youngsters following to retrieve them.
Their answer is simple – replace the play area with a quiet garden where weary shoppers could rest on their way between the estate and the Tesco supermarket, in Greenstead Road.
Balfe Court resident Amanda Stannard said: “A lot more people are getting involved now.
“They have told us their car windows have been smashed and they have had bricks taken out of their garden walls.
“Me and my husband have seen stones being thrown, too. People often don’t feel confident about approaching youngsters to tell them to stop.
“People are beginning to get scared to go down alleyways, and some of our children are worried they will be accused of bad behaviour.
“Sometimes, university students also use the playground as a dumping place. Something has to be done.
“In London, they create a lot of very nice little areas. There are a lot of play areas around here, so taking this one away wouldn’t leave us short.
“Even putting CCTV in would be helpful, as the play area is in the middle of a cul-de-sac.
“As long as we, the community, are involved in what it is turned into, we will be pleased.”
Emma Cruickshank, resident involvement officer for landowner Colne Housing, said: “We have been trying to encourage as many residents as possible to tell us what they think.
“We have already posted leaflets and held two public meetings and will shortly be knocking on doors to speak to people face to face.
“Anybody who wants to have their say can call me directly, on 01206 244717.”
