MEET Mersea Carnival court’s queen and one of her princesses.
The annual fiesta is back after residents Carla Amey and Helen Kay took over organising duties.
One of their first tasks has been auditioning Mersea youngsters to become carnival royalty.
They have introduced the traditional king and queen, as well as two princesses.
Alfie Wood, 14 and Molly Munson, 13, will lead the parade across the island as king and queen.
They will be accompanied by princesses Emily Wood, 12 and Daisy Newton, 9.
The court has already attended Witham and Coggeshall carnivals, where they won second and third prizes.
Mrs Amey said: “Choosing the court was a tough gig for the judges, as they were all very good applicants.
“We have seen their confidence grow, but they also have a great sense of fun.
“Its a big commitment and they are required to go to carnival three times a month and town council events. They are the right people to represent Mersea.”
The carnival has recently received a boost after a big money donation from a London firm.
It is set to return on August 18, with the procession leaving Willoughby car park before joining the rest of the festival at the Lions’ Club.
There are 14 confirmed floats, with space for more. Organisers are also keen to hear from anyone who can help volunteer to marshall the event. If interested, e-mail merseaislandcarnival@gmail.com
