AS London prepares for the greatest show on earth, you can take part in Colchester’s very own Olympic legacy.

The Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers has developed a number of special walks all over the country to celebrate the international links Britain has with the world.

Entitled Walk the World, there are about 20 walks ranging from Birmingham’s industrial heritage to Cardiff’s sporting past, taking routes along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile to Liverpool’s dockyards.

Alex Jackson, communications and media officer for the RGS-IBG, says: “The walk in Colchester is one of a series throughout the UK that uncovers how different countries and their people have shaped our past and present. For example, did you know Colchester, has connections with Belgium, Italy, Germany and Denmark?

“Entitled Conflict and Culture, it is a self-guided walk that starts at St Botolph’s Rail Station and ends at Holy Trinity Church in the centre of the town. It is just over one and a half miles and is suitable for all ages and abilities.”

Part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Walk the World, launched last year by broadcaster Nick Crane, aims to find local connections to all of the 206 Nations taking part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by the start of the opening ceremony.

Thanks to the Colchester walk, they have ticked more than 77. Stops on the way include St Botolph’s Priory, St Helen’s Chapel and Colchester’s Town Hall. Dr Rita Gardner, director of the RGS-IBG, adds: “With Olympic fervour growing what better time to cover the unexpected on your own doorstep.”
