A CLUB which helps people back into work in Colchester is facing the axe.

Falling numbers have been blamed for the possible move after only one or two people regularly turned up to the Shrub End Work Club.

The Stanway work club had to close down at the start of this year for the same reason.

Councillors are urging out-of-work residents to use or lose the club, which is run by Colchester Council with Jobcentre Plus.

Lyn Barton, borough councillor for Shrub End, said: “It’s a bit worrying.

“It’s use it or lose it. In principle it’s a very good idea and I’m sure people will benefit from it.

“It’s a shame it’s under threat.”

Colchester has more than 3,200 claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance, according to the latest figures.

In Shrub End, the latest available figures show the area has the fourth highest amount of youngsters out of work in the town, with 7.6 per cent looking for work in May.

Staff at the Shrub End Work Club help unemployed residents by looking over their CVs and offering interview tips.

They believe many residents do not know they are there to help.

Mrs Barton said: “The information must not be getting out there.

“Obviously people need to know about it if they are to go.”

Work clubs run across Colchester with ones at Abbotts Activity Centre, Greenstead and Church Street, being well used.

The Shrub End club runs from 1.30pm to 3pm on Tuesdays at Shrub End Community and Sports Centre, on Boadicea Way.
