A COLCHESTER tip had to be closed and staff evacuated after a fire broke out.
Firefighters were called to the waste and recycling centre in Shrub End Road at about 2pm yesterday.
Two crews from Colchester were able to put out the flames caused by a faulty electrical goods.
A spokesman for Colchester Council, which runs the site, said: “Staff were evacuated from the building and worked with colleagues from Essex County Council to temporarily close the depot and neighbouring recycling centre to all vehicles and customers.
“No staff were injured and a normal service was maintained throughout the day for customers.
“We apologise for any inconvenience to visitors wanting to use the recycling centre during the short closure period.
“Access was available again as soon as it was safe.”
