THE situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks and although it may be thousands of miles away, we know that it has impacts here in Colchester.
Our heroic soldiers based at Colchester Garrison are rapidly responding to events on the ground and I know everyone in Colchester will wish them Godspeed and a safe return as they evacuate British citizens (Gazette, August 17, “Troops race to help in Kabul evacuation”).
We also extend a warm welcome to the Afghan families making their way to the UK who have supported British Armed Forces over the last 20 years.
Colchester is a Borough of Sanctuary and has a history of supporting those fleeing fear and persecution over the centuries, from Flemish refugees in the 14th century, who settled in the Dutch Quarter, to Syrians fleeing Assad’s brutal regime more recently.
We owe those who have served in our Armed Forces, and those who have supported them, a debt of gratitude for the dedication and sacrifices they have made.
