THE song “All I have to do is dream” by The Everly Brothers is obviously the favourite of those in the cycling fraternity who criticised Sir Bob Russell for his comments about the unnecessary sections of cycle lane.
Talking about these white elephants, it appears that the effected residents have received a letter from Essex Highways outlining proposals for two cycle lanes on East Hill as part of the east/west super highway for their comments - although we all know this means this is what is going to happen whatever you say.
In the world of the above mentioned cycling fraternity, this means the hundreds of new cyclists heading say from east to west will, of course, ride on the roads until reaching the new cycle lane, they will then cycle up East Hill, stopping at the proposed floating bus stop for passengers boarding or getting off of buses, go down Queen Street, up Vineyard Street to use that section in the car park and westward – ho.
In reality people heading west on bikes will be riding from their various starting points on the pavement until they reach the cycle lane - which they may or may not join - they will completely ignore bus passengers at the floating bus stops, continue up East Hill and then ride the wrong way up Priory Street to get to Vineyard Street or will carry on up to Queen Street where they will mount the pavement and ride the wrong way up High Street to reach their destination.
If heading east, they will dismount the pavement from the High Street and possibly join the cycle lane to the traffic lights at the bottom of East Hill - which apparently are to be adjusted - that is stay red for longer so cars can hang around longer and those on bikes have more time to cross, not that this will matter anyway because bikers are prone to going through red traffic lights.
Having crossed Guildford Road they will then mount the path and carry on over East Bridge and homeward bound – sounds more like a nightmare than a dream.
