Colchester United manager Joe Dunne said he could not fault his players, despite their 2-0 defeat at the hands of MK Dons.
Goals from Daniel Powell and Patrick Bamford condemned the U's to defeat at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
The result leaves them five points above the relegation zone, with two games to go.
Dunne said: "I can't fault my players - I thought we were excellent.
"They did their very best and all that was missing was a goal.
"If you're honest, I didn't think that we deserved to lose.
"We switched off twice for their goals but that is why we are where we are."
