ALAN SHARROCKS and Gary Driver were winners of Captain’s Day at Colchester Golf Club.

They returned an impressive 45 points in a three quarters better ball pairs competition, as nearly 120 members joined captain Barrie Minns for his day.

Their round might have been even better, as Sharrocks (two) was a nominal five under par with two holes to go.

But bogies on the final two holes took nothing away from the day. Father and son duo Kevin and Dom Petch, playing off handicaps of six and scratch, were runners-up with 44 points.

In third place were John Williams (15) and Tim Rogers (seven), with 43 points.

Colchester GC’s Captain’s Day also incorporated the inaugural Dick Procter Trophy. Dick, who was always willing to help out, was one of its biggest supporters, died last year.

Nigel Hilliard won the Procter Putter, following a tense final against Mike Kettle.

Nearest the pin prizes went to John Williams (fourth), Philippa Deman (8th), Stuart Reed (13th) and Peter Manby (16th).

Colchester GC also held their Ladies Captain’s Day which saw Ann Jackson organise an Am-Am format. The best two scores of the teams of four counted.

Winners with a total of 95 points were the team of Wendy Smith (24), Shelley Persent (19), Janet Austin (31) and Liz Harrison (36).

The team of Annette Wigley (18), Elaine Gilbert (18), Jan Murray (33) and Carol Watts (28) were runners-up.

Their total of 92 points averaged more than five points a hole.

In third place with 85 points were Margaret Carter (23), Marilyn Free (29), Alison Cordran (26) and Madryn Abnett (13).

Ann Jackson also ran nearest the pin competitions, on the eighth and 16th holes.

Nerys Horrocks almost aced the eighth, after putting the ball to 2½ inches from the hole.

Wendy Smith took the prize on the 16th, while the putting competition was tied between Elaine Gilbert and Sheila Dornan.

In the men’s mid-week stableford at Colchester GC, Paul Jackson playing off 12 returned an excellent 39 points to win.
