PHILIPPA Deman swept all aside to win Colchester Golf Club’s long-standing VJ Cup.

Deman, playing off a handicap on the day of ten, returned 42 points to win the trophy.

She took advantage of the hard fairways and with her game matching the conditions, finished one shot clear of the chasing pack.

Four players handed in cards of 41 points to finish just one point behind Deman.

After a complicated countback, Mel Barker (17) claimed second, with Steve Cullis (18) finishing third.

Andy Smith was adjudged fourth and in fifth spot was Judith Robertson (17).

The VJ Cup, which was first played for in 1955, is a mixed singles competition won by women three times in the last 13 years.

Colchester Ladies also contested the Coronation Cup, which was won by Laura Ship.

Ship, playing off nine handicap, won the 36-hole competition after completing nett rounds of 73 and 75 to take victory from Chris Clarke (23).

Deman enjoyed the best H/C in the morning round, while Liz Lennox had the best in the afternoon including a hole-in-one.

In the support stableford, Annette Wigley (18) returned 38 points with Renate Clarke (27) posting 37 points to take second place.

In third place was Patricia Walker (23) with 35.

The Angel Cup was played with Nigel Balls (24) having the best card after a countback from Alan Snaith (16), both returning 43s.

In third spot on his own was Chris Doyle (14) with 42 points ahead of Dave Blackmore (12) and Jo Mager (20), who shared a respectable 41 points for fourth.

Nearest the pins were Doyle (who claimed a hole-in one on the fourth), Alan Ogilvie (eighth), Ian Devenish (13th) and Neil Moye (16th), while the longest drive fell to Colin Gathercole.
