Sanchez Watt says Colchester United’s players want to turn on the style this season – and play in front of more big crowds at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The U’s attack was impressive in their 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly, which was played out in front of a sell-out crowd of nearly 10,000 on Friday night.

Watt, who signed for the U’s last month after leaving Arsenal, was unlucky not to score against Spurs after his second-minute shot came back off a post.

It would have capped an impressive display by the skilful forward, who believes such attacking enterprise can help to draw bigger crowds at the Community Stadium.

Watt said: “The fans were great and there was a good turnout - it was good to see the stadium full.

“It would of course be nice to see some of them come back next season and we’ve said to each other that the more we win and play well, the more people will come.

“It’s up to us to make them want to come back and watch us and obviously if we’re winning games like we were last season when I was here, people want to come and see that.

“It was a great experience to play against Spurs and great to get 45 minutes.

“We looked sharp but as the game went on they showed their experience and Premier League quality and had the upper hand on us.

“But our counter-attacking looks good and it was good to see the boys express themselves against better players.”

Watt said he was disappointed his early close-range hit the woodwork and did not go in, having been urged by Arsenal fans to score against their arch-rivals Tottenham.

“I got a bit of stick before the game about playing against Spurs and I wanted to get that goal,” said Watt, who was a product of the Gunners' youth academy.

“People were saying that being from Arsenal, I couldn’t lose against Tottenham! “I had good contact with the ball and sometimes, you don’t have that.

“But on this occasion, I would have preferred it to have gone in off my shin.”

Watt is slowly building up his fitness, following his hamstring tear last season.

He completed 45 minutes against Spurs and is set to feature again for Colchester in their pre-season friendly against Ipswich Town, tonight.

He added: “I’m not going to say that I’m 100 per cent yet because it’s still pre-season and I’m still building my match fitness up.

“A lot of the boys are ahead of me and I’m playing a bit of catch-up but there are plenty more games to play.”
