Magnus Okuonghae has admitted he allowed his high standards to slip last season.

But the Colchester United defender says he is ready to recapture his best form in the forthcoming campaign.

Okuonghae, 27, experienced a turbulent period in his career last summer, after his contract expired at the U’s.

The powerful centre-back was linked with several Championship clubs but nothing materialised and he eventually re-signed for Colchester.

Okuonghae admitted his performances were affected by the turmoil but says he is now ready to get back to his best.

He said: “I’d be the first to say that my form last year wasn’t up to the standards I’d set myself.

“What happened last summer and the uncertainty probably played a big part in that, even though I didn’t know that at the time.

“It’s been different this year though because I’ve had the whole summer knowing that I would be coming back to Col U.

“We’re looking to put things right from last year, knowing that we’ve got an unbelievable group with some fantastic additions.

“Sanchez (Watt) and Craig (Eastmond) are great players and I see that every day in training.

“We’ve also got Jabo (Ibehre) and Sam (Walker) back and we’ve just got that buzz.”

Okuonghae has had a summer to remember, after marrying his girlfriend Huda at a ceremony in Wentworth.

“It was definitely the best time in my life,” said Okuonghae, who is preparing for his fifth season at the U’s.

“It’s given me a new inspiration and a new motivation for the season.

“I’m happy; I feel as fit as ever and I’m raring to go.”
