Stanway Rovers boss Barry Lakin got some top tips from former Uruguay international Gus Poyet.

The star put Lakin through his paces at the Hawthorns thanks to Budweiser’s Coach the Coaches programme.

The former Brighton manager’s training session aimed to bolster the Thurlow Nunn premier division side’s attacking threat.

Lakin applied for the programme not knowing which top flight coach he would receive a training session from should he win.

The programme aims to help non-league coaches instil confidence in their players ahead of the new season by enhancing their management skill set.

Lakin said: “Scoring goals from midfield has to happen in any successful side, and to have a coach of Gus’ quality teaching us this is an absolute privilege.

“We all have huge respect for him as a man, and for what he has achieved in his football career.

“Some of the ideas he has introduced are pretty radical, but implementable too.

“This is a results business, however, and I’m sure what we’ve learned will go a long way to helping us achieve our goals for the year ahead.”

Budweiser Coach the Coaches, a new programme to help non-league coaches improve their skills by learning from some of the biggest names in British football, was launched in May by former Sheffield United, QPR and Leeds United manager Neil Warnock.

Poyet said: “The depth of quality in non-league football is one of the English game’s greatest assets, and this is down to people like Barry.

“Balancing a full-time job with being a part-time coach requires enormous dedication, enthusiasm and energy – qualities Barry has in abundance.

“One of my strengths as a player was arriving late into the box, and this is one of the things I worked on with Barry and his midfielders.

“The Budweiser Coach the Coaches programme is a great chance to give back to the game which has given me so much.”

Stanway Rovers is one of five winning clubs who will benefit from Coach the Coaches. Another four non-league teams from around the country will also receive training from a former player or manager.

Poyet is one of five top football coaches and ex-professionals visiting five non-league club coaches from steps 5-7 of the football pyramid.

Each elite coach will be hosting one-on-one mentor sessions to support the non-league managers’ development and enhance their understanding of the game.

Copa America and FA Cup winner Poyet will also feature in a short documentary helping Lakin, with the attacking side of the game, as he prepares to build on his team’s ninth-place finish last season.

The documentary is set to air through Budweiser’s UK Facebook and YouTube pages from 31st August.
