Clinton Morrison is confident the goals will start flowing for Colchester United - once all of their players are back fit.

The U’s record in front of goal has been modest so far this season and they have hit the net only nine times in ten League One games.

Only three teams in the division have scored on fewer occasions than Colchester, who have not won in eight league matches.

However, the U’s attacking threat has been blunted by injuries suffered by Sanchez Watt, Gavin Massey and Freddie Sears.

And veteran striker Morrison is sure the goals will start flying in, once boss Joe Dunne has his best squad to choose from again.

“We have a few injuries at the moment,” said Morrison, who is set to return to the U's squad for their game against Walsall on Saturday after missing the Wolves defeat last weekend because of a dental problem.

“But if we get our best 11 players out on the pitch, we won’t be a million miles away from the top sides in the division.

“When we played the leaders Leyton Orient recently, we were as good as them and what cost us was a couple of moments of slack defending.

“We have a very good squad and we have people who can come into the team aswell.

“People are saying that we should bring someone in to score goals.

“That might help the squad but I don’t think that it would make it better.

“We’re creating chances and we’re going to beat a team by three or four goals eventually.

“But it takes time - we’re still solid and it will come.

“When we get our main players back who help to create things, it’s a totally different thing.”

Morrison is keen to continue to emulate the likes of Kevin Phillips and Teddy Sheringham and play past the age of 40.

The 34-year-old is now in his 16th season as a professional and insists he still has the desire to play for many more years.

“I still learn a lot from someone who is 40 years of age, Kevin Phillips,” said former Birmingham City and Crystal Palace striker Morrison.

“He showed that he still has the hunger and the dedication to do well, especially with the way that he finished.

“It gives me great encouragement that if I look after myself and do the right things, I can do similar things for a few years to come.”
