Colchester United have offered a new contract to sought-after star Alex Gilbey.
Bristol City have had an offer rejected for the highly-rated midfielder and there has been more contact between the clubs this week, according to U’s boss Kevin Keen.
However, the club have signalled their desire to keep him by tabling a fresh deal.
“There’s been contact but that’s something you need to speak to the chairman about,” said Keen.
“We’ve spoken to Alex and his representatives and made it clear we really want him to stay.
“He’s been given another offer of a new contract.
“We’re desperate to keep him and think so much of him.
“But at the same time, we want players to better themselves and go on.
“In my eyes, he can be a Premier League player.”
