Essex-born Alice Kinsella admitted she was “speechless” after striking gold for Team England at the Commonwealth Games.
The 17-year-old, who is the daughter of Colchester United legend Mark and granddaughter of U’s stalwart and former vice-chairman and director John Schultz, won the women's beam on the Gold Coast this morning.
The Basildon-born gymnast said: “I’m still quite speechless. I don’t really know what to say.
“I went out quite confident because I came second in qualifications.
“I thought if I go clean a medal was possible but when I got the gold I didn’t know what to do.”
It was Kinsella's third medal in Australia, following her women’s team silver and all-around bronze.
She scored 13.700 to take top spot on the beam, to continue her fine Commonwealth Games debut.
Kinsella, who is based in Birmingham, had previously represented Great Britain at the 2016 Junior European Championships where she finished with three silver medals in beam, floor and the team event.
Meanwhile, Colchester swimmer Laura Stephens will go in search of a medal when she competes in the women’s 200 metres butterfly final, later today.
