Colchester and Tendring Athletic Club continued to regroup after a recent transition period by bringing home six medals from the Essex Track and Field Championships at Basildon.

Veteran athlete Sian Gifford overcame the fear factor of a recurrence of an Achilles injury that has plagued her in recent years to record a fine victory and take the gold medal in the veterans' 400 metres in 64.1 seconds.

David Gibbon hit top form in the under-20 1,500m as he accelerated on the last lap to win a silver medal with a personal best (PB) of three minutes 58.07s.

Lloyd Heard, 17, was sixth in the same race in 4m 5s and the previous day he had come fourth in the 800m in 1m 58.1s, after running his heat in 1m 57s.

Sean Wilson also performed well in the under-20 age group as he ran his 800m heat in a PB 1m 58.3s to make it to the final where he came fifth in 1m 59s.

Wilson followed this up with a 1,500m in a PB of 4m 11.9.

Laura Condron regained her form in the under-20s, with a solid race in the 1,500m, where she collected a silver medal in 4m 47.5s and she ran her 800m in 2m 20s for fourth.

Helen Bloomfield ran a gallant race to finish a worthy second in the senior women's 800m in 2m 17.4s. She also finished fourth in the final of the 400m.

Danielle Tatum showed true grit in the sweltering conditions to finish her 5,000m in 18m 44s for a silver medal.

Rob Smith tried his hand at the 400m hurdles and ran a respectable 60.4s to finish second in the senior men.

In the under-15 boys, Michael Porter was in terrific form as the 13-year-old ran a PB of 2m 9.9s in his 800m and also broke the 60-second barrier in the 400m.

Training colleague Thomas Gifford ran his heat of the 800m in a PB time of 2m 19.4 and he also showed up well in the 400m.

Other good performances came from Laura Hillyard, who ran her heat in the under-17 400m in 2m 35s, while Craig Webb was fourth in his heat of the 100m in 12.2s and Stacey Ayres did exceptionally well in her under-15 800m in a PB of 2m 29s.

Hannah Coltart shone in the long jump (4.48m) and under-15 75m hurdles.
