Dale Whitnell warmed up in style for his tilt at the St Andrews Links Trophy and the British Amateur Championship over the next two weeks in Scotland.

The highly successful Five Lakes teenager, currently boasting a healthy lead at the top of the Ping English Golf Union Order of Merit, goes to the Scottish-based tournaments on the back of a tremendous triumph in the Lagonda Trophy at the Gogmagog course, Cambridge.

He also equalled the par-70 course record with a brilliant seven-under round of 63 at the start of the second day.

Nineteen-year-old Whitnell, whose handicap has now gone from +3 to +4, turned a one-shot deficit into victory by three strokes at the end of the two-day, four-round event in Cambridge.

Whitnell told the Gazette: "We played 36 holes on both days and at the end of a very windy Wednesday morning I stood one shot off the pace with a first round score of 67.

"I followed up with an afternoon score of 68 to end day one five under par with three others on an aggregate score of 135 after two rounds.

"The weather conditions for the Thursday morning third round were perfect and having equalled the course record I went into the afternoon's fourth and last round leading by four shots.

"It then began to rain heavily and I started off my final round with two bogeys in the first four holes.

"And after recording a birdie and another bogey I was only two shots in the lead with three holes still to play.

"I then birdied the 16th and parred the last two to card a final round score of 71 to take the trophy with victory by three shots on an overall score of 369."

Whitnell will now be in action north of ther border for the next three weeks competing in the St Andrews Links Trophy from now to June 8, followed by the British Amateur Championship at Turnberry from June 13 to 21.
