Colchester United boss Geraint Williams was a happy man after finally landing long-term target Matt Lockwood.

The U's have wrapped up the signing of the Nottingham Forest defender, having had a bid of £100,000 accepted by the City Ground club last month.

Williams has been a long-time admirer of the former Leyton Orient left-back and watched him a number of times last season.

And he was delighted to clinch the signature of Lockwood, his second summer signing following the arrival of fellow defender Matt Heath from Leeds United last month.

Williams told the Gazette: "Matt (Lockwood) is a top quality left-back.

"I like the fact that he's very comfortable on the ball and he's a footballing full-back.

fantastic "He's a fit lad in fantastic condition and he's also a good character.

"He has a great left foot, he's renowned for his set pieces and he did very well at Nottingham Forest."

Williams was impressed by Lockwood's attitude after holding talks with the player.

The full-back is eager to play regular first-team football following an injury-ravaged campaign for Forest last season.

Lockwood's switch to the U's means that he has sacrificed the opportunity of playing Coca-Cola Championship football in favour of League One.

"Forest got promoted last season but in fairness Matt just wants to play football," said the Colchester boss.

"He has decided he wants to come to us and compete for his place at Colchester United."
