COLCHESTER United beat Tranmere Rovers 2-0 to secure their first home win of the season, on Saturday.

Here are five talking points from the U's victory, at the JobServe Community Stadium.

COMPLETE PERFORMANCE

THIS was just the kind of exciting home performance Colchester United fans had been waiting for.

The U’s were dominant from start to finish in every department and fully deserved their 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

No wonder U’s boss Ben Garner labelled his side’s display ‘the complete performance’.

Gazette:

From the very moment Joe Taylor put them ahead in the 11th minute with an superbly-taken goal, Colchester were in pretty much in utter control.

The U’s second goal – which came courtesy of substitute Bradley Ihionvien – was a long time coming given the hosts’ overall dominance.

But it was fully deserved and the only possible downside from the performance was that they did not score more than the two goals that they managed, such was their dominance throughout.

Much of that was down to Tranmere goalkeeper Luke McGee, who pulled off a string of good saves to keep his side in the contest.

But anything other than a Colchester United win yesterday at a sun-kissed JobServe Community Stadium would have been a travesty.

FABULOUS FEVRIER

IT was quite tricky to pick a Colchester man of the match, given the high standard of performance from so many of their players against Tranmere.

But the skill and trickery of Jayden Fevrier really stood out.

Gazette:

The former West Ham United youngster’s excellent display seemed to be fuelled by his new contract and he gave the visitors’ defence a torrid time, with his direct running and talent.

Fevrier is flourishing in his role as a wing-back and his overall work ethic and running throughout the match seems to really suit the position.

The challenge for him now is to do it on a consistent basis, throughout the season.

DREAM START

LOSING key defender Fiacre Kelleher to injury prior to the Tranmere game was a blow for Colchester.

But deadline day signing Zach Mitchell stepped in at centre-back and looked like he had been playing there for years.

Gazette:

The on-loan Charlton Athletic defender looked composed and assured at the heart of the U’s defence, dealing calmly with anything that was thrown at him.

It’s hard to believe Mitchell is only 18 years old, given the mature and serene nature of his debut performance for the U’s.

Cameron McGeehan also impressed on debut in midfield, while Jay Mingi gave Colchester fans a glimpse of what they can expect from him after coming off the bench.

ARTHUR'S HOPE

THE only downside to Colchester United’s fine performance against Tranmere Rovers was the painful wrist injury suffered by Arthur Read which resulted in his substitution with around 20 minutes to go.

Gazette:

It was a real shame, considering how well he had been playing; Read’s excellent pass to Taylor for Colchester’s opening goal epitomised the midfielder’s quality and vision.

Read has started the season in fine form and the U’s will be hoping that the injury is not too serious and he will be available for their home game against Mansfield Town, next Saturday.

ONE OF THEIR OWN

IT was great to see Junior Tchamadeu back at the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday, following his deadline day departure to Championship club Stoke City.

Gazette:

The 19-year-old took the microphone to thank the U’s and their fans at half-time of their game against Tranmere Rovers.

Tchamadeu has made a big impression since emerging through Colchester’s academy to make his senior debut at the age of 16 and then shine in their first team, leading to his move to the second tier.

Everyone at the U’s will be keeping an eye on Tchamadeu’s progress at his new club and hoping to see him maintain the upward trajectory, in his blossoming career.
