COLCHESTER United have appointed Matty Etherington as their new head coach.

The 42-year-old made a positive impression as the U's interim boss, securing ten points from a possible 12 in his time in temporary charge.

Here, Colchester fans have their say on Etherington being named as the club's permanent boss.

Sammie Szmodics

Legend hope he does well

Si Collinson

Was always on the cards after 10 points from 12. The players seem to like playing under him and ground out results. Needs to hit the ground running and carry on picking up points to silence the doubters.

Steve Duckling

I think the decision was made a little premature. He probably deserves the chance, after all players seem to be reacting to him but couldn’t we have let him carry for a few more weeks to see if the run continued? If so, then make the decision, if not then look elsewhere

Jamie Hudson

I doubt anyone else was interviewed, he was always no 1 choice no matter what he did. Back to cheap internal appointments who shouldn’t be getting the job. Appreciate the points he’s gotten but the football has been no better. Bored of this

Sammy B

Expected and many will be disappointed but we need throw our full support behind him and the team, it's happened so let's go.

Good luck to Matty. Deserves the chance after the points haul he's accrued. Shown good tactical acumen & seems a good footballing man. Don't quite get what the cry babies om here expect. We aren't exactly an attractive proposition!

Tracey Welsh

A very good appointment. Most importantly the players look as though they want to play for him. You can’t argue with 10 out of 12. Not a total internal appointment because he hasn’t been @ColU_Official  long. Let’s get behind him and the team

David Clayton

Based on results he deserves the chance. Performances could have been better but he has made changes during games that either shored up the team to hold on for wins or provide a greater attacking threat. The players seem to like him as well; not sure that was the case with BG or WB

Steve Lowe

Need to get behind him now he’s been appointed permanently.

Tony C

Not convinced he is the right man for the job, yes we have 10/12 point which is fantastic but performances really need to improve too. Hopefully he proves the doubter wrong (including me), good luck Matt.

Steve Marriage

I am not convinced but results count. Nothing seams to have changed radically and we still look too slow and lack ideas. If it’s more of the same he’ll be gone early in 2024. Let’s see how we do by the end of this month. I would have kept him interim until then personally.

Rob Ladbrook

Pathetic, we have a proven track record of employing from within since going down to league 2 and we are still in league 2. Give him till march then the under 12s coach will get the nod, shambles of a club

Same bloody cycle, Cowling going for the cheap and easy option. Matt has got us 10 points out of a possible 12 but the performances have been awful. Was always going to happen eventually. But I believe Matt will get sacked in the next 2-3 months

David Pomroy

After taking 10 from 12 he deserves the chance. Feel like he was holding things steady as interim, not wanting to change things too much. Now he is perm hopefully we see his style of play coming through. Our most successful manager's had little or no experience.

Euan

Disappointing. They win a few games as interim and get the job but never works. Never has never will.

S3

Another cheap and lazy appointment.

Mister Mango

Prediction: good form will continue but we’ll have a dip and not do well enough to finish anything higher than mid-table. Optimism will grow over summer as we bring in new players. But disappointing start to next season and he’s sacked Oct-Nov next year.

Chris Howlett

Completely insane. The poor bloke will be sacked before the end of the season. Cowling seems to want to destroy careers. Matty should have been number two to an experienced manager before getting the head coach role.
