Bowls is a beloved sport but unlike others is suffering from a lack of interest from younger generations.

Bowls is a sport in which you roll weight biassed bowls or woods at the jack or the kitty and hit it , although it's more common to just aim to be the closest to the jack. It can be played inside on a special carpeted flooring called the green, which is made nearly entirely out of polypropylene, or outside on a bowling lawn. There are no massive differences between indoor and outdoor bowls except the different surfaces and the different types of woods that then must be used. These sports do not get as much attention as any other sports and this has led to the sport being pushed aside by the younger groups. The last time the sport was globally displayed was in the 1988 Olympics as a demonstration sport but since it has not been included in the official program.

There is lots of space for our generation in the bowls world. In more recent years bowls have become quite commonly shown on Youtube and BBC channels. For those of you that are interested in starting to play bowls, I highly advise you research your area as a lot of towns have a local indoor or outdoor bowls club, sometimes both, and they may have remarkable opportunities for you. My town has Clacton and District Indoor Bowls Club which is amazing for younger people wanting to get involved in bowls. It has youth memberships which are free and they have youth sessions every early Saturday morning.

In 2014 the world national champion in women’s single indoor bowls was 18, could you be the next champion?
