Lyle Taylor pledged that Colchester United are ‘going to continue to cause problems’ after he netted the winner against Millwall in a pre-season friendly at The Den.

The summer signing was on the scoresheet in the early minutes of the game, before hitting the woodwork from a spot-kick soon after.

The U’s held on for a 1-0 victory over the Championship side and the match winner was certainly impressed with his team’s efforts.

“It’s never an easy thing to play well against a Millwall team, with or without fans at The Den," he told cu-fc.com.

"It’s a difficult place to come and play football. The boys were brilliant, the attitude to work was exceptional.

“We caused a lot of problems, but we’ve got good players, and we are going to continue to cause problems because we have good players.

"It’s about everybody buying into what we are doing and the direction we want to go in. And let’s prove we are a good team and what does that look like? We’ll see.”

The 30-year-old talked with experience when discussing match fitness ahead of the new season.

He added: “The majority of the group aren’t going to be 90-minute fit when it comes to Wimbledon in just under two weeks.

“But what we will be is resilient and ready to give our absolute all for the cause and that is every last player out there in a Colchester kit.

"We will be giving absolutely everything we can to be as physically prepared, and that’s the manager and the assistant manager’s job. And, we have to put the performance in and have the right mentality to carry us forward.”

The striker reserved praise for Bradley Ihionvien, who was involved in the only goal of the game.

The youngster made his professional debut last August and looks set to learn from the EFL veteran during the upcoming season.

Taylor said: “I just said to Bradley ‘we have to work hard at the top of the pitch, because that creates us'.

“That creates so many situations where our midfield and back line can pick up so many second balls and that’s what happened. Then, we are on the attack again.

"That’s why it is so important to do your work at the top end of the pitch. And that’s what I am trying to stress to him. I thought he was exceptional at it.”
