THE Colchester United faithful finally got to see their new-look side in action against Cambridge United - but as always with all things U's, it was not quite as simple as it could have been.
The game was billed as a home friendly, only for a last-minute switch to St Neots FC as our pitch was still requiring some tender loving care to be ready for the new season on the horizon.
Nevertheless, those that made the trip were not disappointed.

Of course, with this been pre-season there is always a caveat and that needs to be remembered as the scoreline is digested.
A 6-0 win against a team from the league above, this close to the season starting, seems very impressive and of course, will give provide the confidence that winning breeds.
However, you do have to look deeper; Cambridge had played West Brom the night before and so we faced their younger players, not a team of what would be regular first teamers.
That said, you can only play what is in front of you and the U’s sure did that.
From the off, it was clear that Danny and Nicky have been working their magic.
We looked like a footballing side, every player wanted the ball and knew where their next pass was going, sometimes before they had even received the ball.
The movement was flowing and fluid, with improved fitness across the pitch.
Goals were well taken and the confidence was oozing, to the point that the young Cambridge side looked shell-shocked to be 3-0 down after just 20 minutes.
A 5-0 half-time lead was impressive and although we only managed one more goal in the second half, it was pleasing to see Danny on the touchline demanding more from all.

Not content to sit back and go though the motions, he was asking and expecting more across the pitch.
It wasn't a criticism, more installing in the players that he felt they had another gear and he was looking for them to realise this.
This will no doubt be something that will be needed at points, in the coming months.
With our opener at AFC Wimbledon now less than a week away, there's of course talk of what would count as success for us, this season.
Everyone goes into the new season with the aim of becoming champions but after what we have been through over then past few years, I personally think we should temper expectations and look for a solid mid-table finish as a minimum.
Use this season to put down a strong foundation to mount a promotion push the following year and create a side who not only go up to League One but are comfortable there.
While I’d be happy to be wrong and see us walk the league, I just feel that behind all the hype we have to remember what has come before and walk, before we run.
Whatever happens, it will no doubt be a season of ups and downs, with highs and lows.
Let's all get behind the lads from the off at Plough Lane on Saturday - a solid three points there will show one and all that we are back and mean business. Up the U’s.
