COLCHESTER United under-18s won 3-1 at Charlton Athletic in their final Premier League Cup game, writes BRIAN WALLER.

On a thoroughly miserable wet and very windy morning, Elliott Ward's side were victorious at the Sparrows Lane ground in New Eltham, Surrey.

This was Colchester's final group game in the cup and with a third win in three games, they have now guaranteed a place in the knockouts.

Colchester took an early lead with a goal by Burak Sabah, who scored from a rebound after ten minutes.

The U's suffered a first-half injury to Dwayne Campino Do Vale, who was replaced by Ryan Mumbo.

But they increased their lead when Leo Makatta curled a shot in from 18 yards which finished in the corner of the net on 50 minutes.

A Colchester change saw the trialist on for Makatta but they got a third goal from Kai Martin, who converted an Owen Moore cross from close range on ten minutes.

There was a late home goal for Charlton but it was too little, too late and it was three more group points for the squad.
